Glass Bottom Boat Tour John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

In the afternoon mom and I stepped onto a glass bottom boat.  It was a new experience for us and a lot of fun.  We didn’t see many fishes but we did see a lot of green turtles.

A few interesting facts about Florida’s Key Coral Reefs
The Florida Keys Reef Tract is the only living coral barrier reef in North America and is the 3rd largest coral barrier reef in the world.
The reef runs roughly 221 miles down the south-eastern coast of Florida.
Florida’s coral reefs came into existence 5,000 to 7,000 years ago.
Coral reefs are specialized habitats that provide shelter, food and breeding sites for numerous plants and animals. 
There are over 260 species of tropical fish and around 80 species of coral.  Some of the fish that live in the coral reef are Sargent Major, Blue Hamlets, Angelfish, Barracudas, Snappers, Grunts…

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is America’s first undersea park located at Mile Marker 102.5 in Key Largo Florida.  It was established in 1963.  Named for the late Miami newspaper editor John D. Pennekamp who was also instrumental in preserving the land that would become the Everglades National Park. 

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park does have a campground but was closed when we visited the park.  There is fishing allowed in designated areas as well as three beaches.  It has a couple of short trails you can hike.  The park also has snorkeling tours, scuba tours,  glass bottom boat tours and they also rent boats.  It is a beautiful state park both on land and ocean.  Mom and I explored the park late morning and then later on in the afternoon we decided to go on a glass bottom boat tour.
