Don't Buy Gas In Rodeo

I forgot to gas up the car before coming down here and they charge $3.50 a gallon. I felt like telling the clerk "excuse me I have to go hock the family farm before I can fill up." We didn't fill up, just got enough to go to another town (20 miles away) that has more than one gas station.

We made it and it is beautiful. I am listening to the coyotes howl. Awesome.

Kids, if you need to talk I have yahoo messenger open and the winds are going to be calm so I can leave the satellite up and stay connected via the internet.

Still fighting the webpage but I hope to have the kinks out of it soon.

Put Him In My Pocket

Have ever met someone that is so interesting that you forget to ask him his name? I had that pleasure in Silver City New Mexico. We went to their museum and I overheard him talking about maintaining his grandfather’s gravesite. Of course I had to ask him where the cemetery was located and that is what led me into this wonderful conversation about the history of Silver City.

I heard the tale of how the town founder, John Bullard was killed by an Indian. He was shot in the chest with an arrow which made him go down in a sitting position with the most surprised look on his face. Seconds later he just toppled over backwards dead.

I heard about Catherine Atrim, Billie the Kid’s mother and what a delightful person she was. She came out west for her health, she had TB and during the time she was well enough to get out of bed she proved to be a “delightful Irish lady.”

I heard about his grandfather, Tom and the family feud that led to the killing of his Uncle.

Of course the story was completed by a story of a delightful lady, Millie. She came to Silver City and started a “cat house.” Back in 1940 when he was a youngun he met her and asked her if she knew his father. Thanks to her, he had stories of his father. Like Sadie Orchard, she was generous to a fault and helped the community.

For an hour the west came to life for me and driving home I saw the country in a whole new perspective.

I was hoping to find some pictures of stories of old Tyrone New Mexico, a ghost town that I did not try to find. I found some pictures of the town but no stories. I feel the website Ghosttowns describes it better than I could so I will quote them.

Tyrone occupies a singular position in the history of New Mexico ghost towns. Nowhere else will the ghost town visitor gaze upon what once was a display of rococo mansions patterned after the imposing Mediterranean-style homes of Spain. All this was the idea of Mrs. Dodge of the giant Phelps-Dodge Corporation. It was her dream to make Tyrone into the most beautiful mining town in the world. She first engaged the services of the well-known architect Bertram Goodhue, the same Goodhue who designed the buildings of the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Diego in 1915 and the Capitol building in Lincoln, Nebraska, to come to New Mexico. He did and the same fundamental plan was adopted for Tyrone. The town was built including a business section, a residential section, a school, a hospital and palatial residences at a cost of over one million dollars. The project was completed in 1915 and ready for occupancy. Except for the ravages of time, Tyrone today is not much different than it was in 1915. The reason? There were rumors being circulated that the rich copper deposits were not as rich as once believed and who would want to move into a failing operation. Rumors became fact in 1921when the mines closed and people moved away. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.

One word of warning about this website…. Turn off your sound.

It is moving on day. I still can’t post my pictures because of the slow internet. Hopefully at the next park.

FYI

We are all set for peace and quiet! It comes at a price though, we will have no phone service. Starting tomorrow kids you will not be able to call until we leave. I don't know when that will be either so don't ask. If you do then Hannah and Robert will be spending Spring Break with us at this wonderful location.

We will be staying near Rodeo New Mexico with the Chiricahua Mountains to the west and the Peloncillo Mountains to the east. It is beautiful country and quiet. No TV or phones and hopefully, since we are close to the office, we will have Internet service. If not I can put up my satellite.

I will be posting our adventures we had yesterday soon.

Its A Miracle

We have left Las Cruces. Our original plan was to leave yesterday but there were "wind warnings" which delayed us. This morning was beautiful with 10 - 15 mph winds and mom and I were packing like two crazy women. Even Surely Not seemed excited. We left the KOA and drove two hours to our destination. We are firm believers in going to places we want to see no matter how far or how close.

We are in Lordsburg New Mexico and have spent the evening figuring out where we want to go and what we want to see. There is not a lot of excitement in Lordsburg, folks and we like that. We are going to do a little ghost town hunting, see more unusual rock formations, and of course we will be stopping at every cemetery along the way. I hope to get lots of pictures. Our plan is to spend a couple of days here and then head into a very remote part of New Mexico... far far away from the people, total isolation for a week. It will be nice.

I wish I could have met you Lynilu. Next time we are in Las Cruces we will set up a time and place. I loved the KOA there. Very clean park, very nice people but it was a little expensive like all KOAs even with my discount card.

Later.

Mountains

I finally found a book that scared the devil out of me. The title is “Mountain Directory West.” When the introduction begins “There is an old saying among over-the-road truckers. “There are two kinds of drivers – those who’ve been in trouble on a mountain grade and those who will be,” you know this book is not for the faint of heart.

As I finished reading the introduction and studied the maps and the descriptions of the mountain passes it became crystal clear to me that I will not be going through them in my little house on wheels. The scare I had going into El Paso has damaged me for life. The good thing is it does show the roads that go around and if I can’t get around then I am not going. Sorry son but you are surrounded by mountains.

It is a great book to have though. If you still want to travel into the mountains then this would be a great book for your library.

What scared mom was the following passage from the book:

“Imagine yourself descending a mountain grade in your RV. You didn’t know there was such a long, steep grade on this highway. What a surprise! And things are not going well. You have a white-knuckle grip on the steering wheel. The engine is not holding back all of this weight, the brakes are smelling hot or even smoking, you’re pushing harder on the brake pedal but your speed keeps increasing. All you can see ahead is more mountains. Your mind is racing through all of the available options and none of them are good. “I’ve got to do something,” you say “or I’m not going to make it.” The options include: run into the rock wall, go over the side, hit those trees, or see if you can make the next curve and ride it out.

A highway patrol officer in Oregon told us that in the summer an average of one motorhome per week burns to the ground while trying to climb Cabbage Hill on I-84 east of Pendleton.”

On that note I am happy to say we are heading west tomorrow….

White Rabbit, For Those That Don't Know

Or those who can't remember.

Chloride New Mexico

Mom and I went exploring on the nineteenth, once again searching for ghost towns. I realize that there are many ghost towns in the US but the west holds the mystery and romance.

The links below will take you to both sites. With Chloride I got a little carried away with the history and if you don’t want to read all of it just click on the number 9 and that will take you to the pictures.

Monticello New Mexico was our favorite. The town was built in a square fashion for protection from the Indians. Also a lot of the original buildings were still there. It was just a quaint little town.

We then journey to Chloride. It was a long, windy, lonely road, 34 miles from Truth or Consequences – right in the middle of nowhere. Chloride would be a true ghost town if it wasn’t for Don and Donna. They moved there in the 1970’s with the intentions of making it come to life again. They purchased the two remaining stores with the intentions of restoring them to their former selves. One of the buildings was an assay office and the other was the store. They did a wonderful job.

The treasure in this was the store. In the 1920’s the previous owner boarded up the windows and locked the door leaving inside all of the merchandise. It was a time capsule. Of course everything was littered with guano and bird poo which required days and months and probably years to clean. The store has everything in it, from food items to an old safe. It was the most fascinating museum I have ever gone through because everything was original and not replicas.

Donna was our tour guide and my favorite story she told of the history of Chloride was the one of a wonderful woman named Cassie.

Cassie married at 16 to a worthless cowboy. She never had anything, moved constantly until they moved to Chloride. With little to no money she created a beautiful home. If she wanted the pretty carved chairs that she had seen, she made it herself. She wore beautiful crocheted boots and shoes that she created herself with nothing but scrap wood. They are beautiful shoes. She made all of her own clothes and if she wanted something pretty on it she quilted, embroidered, or painted it on. She made baskets out of coffee cans using a tin snip and made photograph frames using the same method only she made it out of cans. She was an artist who truly saw beauty in everything. Her work is amazing. When she passed her sons came down to settle her estate. They only took the shotgun and told the Edmunds to throw the rest away. Fortunately the Edmunds kept everything and it is on display at the museum. I would have loved to have met this amazing woman.

Enjoy the pictures.

Go Ask Alice

The dental work is completed. I arrived at the office at 10:00 and left at 2:00 with a new smile. The dentist office is so nice. In each of the little cubicles where patients sits is a huge picture window. It overlooks a small yard, which is surrounded by a very tall adobe fence. In front of each window (in the yard) is a statue. The statue I sat staring at was of a little boy holding a ladder while his sister is on it. It was a large sculpture. Someone came in and lowered my chair so I was lying flat on my back. After thirty minutes of poking and prodding I was raised back into sitting position and to my amazement there was a live white rabbit in the yard.

I asked the assistant: “Excuse me, but is there a large white rabbit in the yard or am I hallucinating?”

Of course when I made a reference to the song “White Rabbit” I totally lost her. When she was leaving I said “Remember what the dormouse said.” The dentist is my age and totally understood the joke.

Like Fireflies I Always Come Back

Sheri Reynolds

Due to drinking coffee after five, I didn’t stumble off to bed until the wee hours in the morning. I curled up with a book written by Sheri Reynolds. Hannah, “Firefly Cloak” is another must read on your list. Her imagination is mind boggling and with this, as with her other books, there is a message that doesn’t get lost in the insanity. The book starts out with Travis and Tessie being left in a campground by their mother. Fortunately the mother had the sense to write her mother’s phone number on Travis’ back in black magic marker. Tessie and Travis were taken to their grandparent’s home where they were raised. From CIA bomb carrying baby birds to discovering their mother is a mermaid this book does not let you down. Brilliant, imaginative, poetic are just a few adjectives to describe this book. Like “Bitterroot Landing” and “The Rapture of Canaan” Sheri Reynolds wrote another novel to be remembered.

The Shirt

My daughter gave me a wonderful gift, a bright orange shirt that I would estimate its age at 8 years. To the human eye it shows its age sadly with worn out places and stretched out sleeves. To those that know, it carries tears, laughter, fears, and two hearts on its sleeve.

It is a magical shirt, that when you put it on it will take you back in time when life was bittersweet. It transports you back in time and if you close your eyes a slideshow of memories occurs. My memories, when I slip it on is of two brown hair teenage girls, rutted, washed out roads, beer can alley, a house by the river, and dreams of vineyards. I remember tie dying t-shirts in the basement, those crazy girls jumping in the lake in February, laughter, and the love two girls had for each other. My daughter’s memories are hers to tell.

From its beginnings of production to being taken home this shirt has traveled. It was a gift, to my daughter, along with a lock of long brown hair. It has been worn with pride to being held by a sad eyed brown hair girl. It absorbed her tears, her laughter, her memories, and when she slipped it on it felt to her that she was being hugged once again by her best friend.

Watching my daughter and her friend, I found out what friendship really means. I also found a person, a young teenager that had the ability to accept her fate, and had the ability to explain it to her friend in a way that I have never seen or witnessed. Her life was not a long good-bye, it was a daily hello.

Hannah, I love and miss you.

The Weather

We didn’t get any snow, not even a flake but enough rain fell to encourage the plants to grow. There is snow on the mountains and that is enough snow for me.

The Dream

Every once in a while my daughter, Hannah will send me one of her dreams for me to analyze. I am not an expert by any means but I have been pretty good at doing this. I have a dream for Hannah and others if they wish to try to figure this dream out. I rarely dream but when I do it is something that makes me scratch my head. This dream is a little embarrassing. I found a turd. Don’t know where it was, it was just there. I realize that this could come from Surely’s amazing abilities to poo 5 times a day. This rather innocuous turd suddenly sprouted a Furbie head but it was an angry Furbie head. Then bat wings sprouted from its side and that was enough to wake me up and make me sit up. This is not a good thing if you are sleeping in a bunk bed.
The Recipe

Crock Pot Recipe For Jolie

4 cups Chicken broth

1 can Cream of mushroom soup

1 16 ounces sauerkraut, rinse -- drain

8 ounces fresh mushrooms -- slice

1 medium Potato -- cut small cubes

3 medium Carrots -- chopped

1 medium Onion -- chopped

2 Ribs celery -- chopped

3/4 pound Smoked Polish sausage -- cube

1/2 cup Chicken; cooked -- chopped

2 tablespoons Vinegar

1 teaspoon Dried dill weed

1/2 teaspoon Pepper

Combine all ingredients in a 3 to 4-qt Crockpot. Cover and cook on low for 10 to 12 hours or until veggies are tender.

Root Canal

I thought I would never say this.... my root canal went well. Absolutely painfree and I have not experienced any pain.

I left the dentist office yesterday afternoon. The dentist worked on me for an hour so I was numb and a little swollen. There was a bookstore a few blocks down from the dentist office so we made a quick stop before I drove home. I was getting prepared to spend the rest of my day on the couch in pain but it didn't happened. I was so surprised.

The dental experience in Las Cruces has been (so far) painfree. Great place to stop over to have a root canal and a crown.

We are expecting cold weather and possible snow. I don't think it will happen. It is now 1:37 a.m. and I haven't seen a flake, just rain. Believe it or not I am disappointed. We went from 70 degrees today to 27 degrees, quite a change.

Mom and I did try the Saurkraut crockpot recipe and it was "okay" which translates to "I will eat the rest but don't cook it again." I will share the recipe in my next posting.

Until then.

Just Babbling

I received a call from my sister this morning, and the conversation left me feeling blue. How is my sister feeling? Overwhelmed I would say but she wouldn’t say. She is facing caring for two people who are dear to her. One of those situations where the family needs to step in and they are doing so willingly. Currently there are no plans for them to move in with Deanie but I can see it coming.

We promised dad that we would never put him in a nursing home. All of the care was provided first by mom, then by me. It was a lot of responsibility and it was a lot of work. It also required a lot of patience. To this day I don’t know what was worse – shaving dad or bathing dad.

Have you ever tried to shave an older gentleman (wrinkles and all) with cerebral palsy? One time I really thought I had a handle on him. Until I heard his muffle cry “I can’t breath.” It appears I had my hand over his mouth and nose. There are funny moments in every situation.

The time I had just finished with his bath. Wearing nothing but a towel I rolled him into his bedroom, where I strapped him in his lift. After raising him I realized how funny this situation looked with him dangling from the ceiling with nothing on but a towel and a frown. You know how warped I am; I left him there after telling him I was going to get the camera. He laughed folks and there is no photograph. Yes Hannah, it was destroyed after I put it on his computer as a wallpaper.

I just hope that when the care becomes too much for my sister and her husband they will know it would be the right thing to do. They can find a home and monitor it. Mom and I made that difficult decision with dad. There was nothing more we could do and fortunately for him he passed away. We kept our promise.

What do you see, nurses, what do you see,
what are you thinking when you're looking at me?
A crabby old woman, not very wise,
uncertain of habit, with faraway eyes.

Who dribbles her food and makes no reply
when you say in a loud voice, "I do wish you'd try!"
Who seems not to notice the things that you do,
and forever is losing a stocking or shoe.

Who, resisting or not, lets you do as you will
with bathing and feeding, the long day to fill.
Is that what you're thinking? Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse; you're not looking at me.

I'll tell you who I am as I sit here so still,
as I do at your bidding, as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of ten with a father and mother,
brothers and sisters, who love one another.

A young girl of sixteen, with wings on her feet,
dreaming that soon now a lover she'll meet.
A bride soon at twenty - my heart gives a leap,
remembering the vows that I promised to keep.

At twenty-five now, I have young of my own
who need me to guide and a secure happy home.
A woman of thirty, my young now grown fast,
bound to each other with ties that should last.

At forty my young sons have grown and are gone,
but my man's beside me to see I don't mourn.
At fifty once more babies play round my knee,
again we know children, my loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead;
I look at the future, I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing young of their own,
and I think of the years and the love that I've known.

I'm now an old woman and nature is cruel;
'tis jest to make old age look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles, grace and vigor depart,
there is now a stone where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells,
and now and again my battered heart swells.
I remember the joys, I remember the pain,
and I'm loving and living life over again.

I think of the years - all too few, gone too fast
and accept the stark fact that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, nurses, open and see,
not a crabby old woman; look closer - see ME!

Stephen King

I have always wanted to read a Stephen King novel but I don’t want to be scared half to death. Rumor has it; he can do that to you.

Last week I found his latest book and after little thought and much impulse, I bought it. I started reading it yesterday and haven’t been able to put it down. It is not because it is the best book I have ever read; I wanted to be scared witless. I wanted to have Stephen King nightmares and this book was not producing. I am now ¾ into the book and finally ACTION! Ghost, a giant frog, twin girls being chased into the ocean, death, destruction, and I am…..bored.

Yes I am so bored with the book that I just want to pitch it out the window.

I like the characters and the way he introduced them to you. He made them a little unreal but likeable. After the first five or six chapters I knew what was going to happen. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. I already knew who was going to die and the reason for the main character’s fanatical painting sprees. I knew who was going to be resurrected and who wasn’t. I wish he would have painted Elizabeth young because she seemed like the most interesting character in the book. I bet she had stories to tell that could curl the hair on your toes.

I am going to finish the book while in the Doctor’s office. Now that is enough to scare the bejesus out of me, ROOT CANAL!

I have been trying to figure out a way to describe my feelings while I was in Mexico having a temporary filling put in. I want to keep things “nice” and not vent my opinions. If you are going to take the road to Mexico to have dental work done – stay away from Palomas Mexico. It is not a good place to go. They have the staff, the clean exam rooms and they are friendly but they are not what they say they are. If you have any medical issues stay in the US. A professional told me all I needed to know. If you are going to cross over in El Paso then there are actual dentists there that are quite good but I couldn’t get the names. As it stands now I am paying the same price for dental work as I would in Mexico and getting the same thing done with the exception of getting a partial. I am satisfied.

It Is Up My Alley

My dental experience in Mexico was interesting. The clinic was clean, the staff wonderful, but when it came time to pay I had to barter. I have never bartered for dental work in my life and I will chalk it up to “what an experience.” I had a temporary filling and an x-ray done. The total cost….. Drum roll please…..$240.

I could get my dental work done much cheaper in the good ole US so I started haggling. I ended up saving $100 and as soon as I could I made an appointment with a dentist in Las Cruces.

Now for the rest of the story: they would have given me a post, a crown, a root canal, and a new partial for $1500. That is a good price but I have severe allergies to pain medication. As tempted as I was, I knew it would be safer for me to have that kind of work done in the US with a hospital close by.

The appointment is set for tomorrow, which by the way is my birthday, Happy Freaking Birthday to Me. All I want for my birthday is my one back tooth.

I have found the best restaurant in Las Cruces. Forget Si Si Senor or Double Eagle, drive to the Pancake Alley, order up a Wimpy Burger and onion rings while grooving on the tunes of the sixties and seventies. I am partial to the “Hotter Than Your Mama” though. What makes a good restaurant even better is the staff. The staff at Pancake Alley is fantastic, great people, great conversation, and wonderful displays of Betty Boop, Elvis Presley and James Dean.

Ah food! Life is good! I just don’t think we will ever leave Las Cruces.

Hola

If the month of January reflects how my year is going to be I think I will dig a hole and hide. With the near daily sinus problems, the headaches, and the abdominal discomfort I am looking for relief. The final insult to injury was when I broke my tooth. Not just any tooth but the tooth that my I need in order to wear my partial. We are looking at a major problem folks not to mention costly.

I went to the office and asked if anyone knew of a good dentist. Just about everyone said “Fierro Clinic.” I am not sure of the spelling. I asked for the location and was told it was in Palomas.

I never heard of Palomas New Mexico. I asked for directions.

It is in Mexico, not New Mexico. I am sorry folks but my teeth are American made and they are going to stay that way. Vickie, my dentist would have a fit if she knew I was even contemplating going over the border. Then I heard the cost is about 1/3 of what they charge in the United States. A retired doctor said he goes there. Everyone flashed me their perfectly straight pearly whites.

We are off to Palomas Mexico tomorrow, which I find strange because I started celebrating my birthday in Central America. I couldn’t go last year and didn’t think of it this year until now. I will be out of the country perhaps a few days short of my birthday but it doesn’t matter. Maybe by my birthday I will have all of teeth back in my mouth where they belong. That would be a truly wonderful birthday present to save a few hundred dollars.

Of course I will bring my camera and take pictures but not of my dental experience. I will let you know what happens tomorrow.

Later.

In Response To Jolie's Blog

1.) I'm looking for simple (GOOD) recipes for a small 1.5 quart sized crock pot. Like maybe 1 meal and a lunch type recipes.

Broccoli soup – I don’t think you would want that one.

2.) Write a story of a favorite memory from say the age of 11 or 12.

On my 13th birthday my mom had a party for me with lots of friends and acquaintances. Of course I had to open my presents in front of everyone! One of my gifts was hose complete with stocking belt. I wanted to die.

3.) Write a plan for a dream vacation.

With the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, the largest freshwater lake in Central America, volcanoes, mountain ranges, cloud forests, rainforests, abundant bird and animal life and more, Nicaragua calls to me.

4.) Write about a plan that you can do in your community to help our world get healthy. It could be a plan to feed the poor, mentor kids, help the green cause or simply help a neighbor in need. Or any other such brilliant idea that fits you and your community. Really think it out. How would you do it? Would you need to advertise? Would it involve getting donations? Etc...

After working in a state office for years, I would promote donating cars to families in need. Perhaps a couple of garages could donate some time and parts for repairs. A lack of transportation seems to be what traps people.

5.) Take these 5 words and write a poem or a story of fiction. Hero, jealous, marbles, relics and love.

This is not fiction but here it goes.

My hero is my mother, at times I find myself jealous of all her accomplishments. She considers herself a relic of times gone by but she is timeless. Yes she still has all of her marbles. Love you mom.

Looking For Ghosts

Last week mom and I decided to get out of the house and look for ghost towns.

After doing a little research we decided to drive Hwy 27. Our destination was Lake Valley. Click here for pictures.
.
Surely Not is doing great! Yes Blogger Wife drugs are wonderful. She is bouncing around like a puppy. She is adapting well to the changes in her life but still is vocal about being put in a kennel at night.

When do you and Dirk want my children and grandchildren. Do I have Scott’s dentist call you about the handy dandy payment plan? Read Dirk’s Blog if you want to know what I am talking about. It is a great plan.

Looking Out My Front Door

Everyone was watching the balloons!

Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon
Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon
We could float among the stars together, you and I
For we can fly we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon
The world's a nicer place in my beautiful balloon
It wears a nicer face in my beautiful balloon
We can sing a song and sail along the silver sky
For we can fly we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon
Suspended under a twilight canopy
We'll search the clouds for a star to guide us
If by some chance you find yourself loving me
We'll find a cloud to hide us
We'll keep the moon beside us
Love is waiting there in my beautiful balloon
Way up in the air in my beautiful balloon
If you'll hold my hand we'll chase your dream across the sky
For we can fly we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon
Balloon...
Up, up, and away.....

Almost Dead

With having cold weather, we are fortunate that the staff at the campground checks our propane tank. If it is low, they will refill it so we don’t have to worry about running out in the middle of the night. There is a wee problem though. It is usually early in the morning when they swing by, so we don’t hear them checking it. This morning we saw a stocking cap figure walking silently by the front door and Mom grabs the bat. We almost killed one the staff.

Have you ever seen the A&E show “Haunting? “ True stories of possessions, haunted houses, and haunted people guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat? One afternoon mom and I were sitting on the edge of our seats watching a show about a possession of a 12-year old child. They were performing an exorcism on him to rid him of several demons. This poor child’s head was spinning, he was speaking in foreign tongues, spewing out profanities, and his little eyes were red. Right in the middle of all this drama, we heard a crunch, crunch, crunch... It was the sound of footsteps right outside our door. Mom grabs the bat. We almost killed the RV repairman.

I wonder why no one ever visits with us anymore.

Greetings

Surely is doing fine. There has been some changes made which she does not approve but I really don’t have a choice. The biggest change in her life is she is now the unhappy owner of a dog crate. It is big enough for her to stand up and move around. Last night was her first night in her crate. She whined for a while but soon settle down.

The reason for the crate is she is having a lot of accidents, especially at nights, in the house How does a 6 pound dog generate 10 pounds of dog flops is beyond me.

Right now she is curled up in my lap sleeping, a place she demands to be at all times. If by some chance I am standing up (god forbid) she will be under my feet. I feel her logic is this, if she can trip me she can climb on my lap.

The other day (before the crate) I woke up to the usual 10 pounds of fun and clean up on the floor. After cleaning it up, I put Surely outside so she can make another contribution in a proper place. I will admit that I was at my wits end with her and was not in the mood for a cuddle. When we went inside I sat down in my favorite chair (see picture below). Surely was having a hissy fit because I wouldn’t let her sit on my lap. I got up and put her on her favorite pillow. Then I sat down. For thirty minutes Surely circled me. When that failed to get my attention she jumped up in the passenger seat and tried to climb over that to get to me. I finally had enough. You can’t get anything done with someone circling you, climbing, and whining. I picked her up. She stayed in my lap for an hour. I had to put her down to get dressed. While I was in the bathroom she sat by the door and cried.

I see a lot of changes in her behavior. Confusion is the biggest issue besides the acute paranoia that she suffers when I am out of sight. The medicine she is taking currently is helping with her vomiting but I have a feeling it will return when she runs out.

We will be staying in New Mexico a little bit longer. After the weather warms up and the hot water heater is fixed we will be out and about exploring. I do have some pictures of a cemetery and of course, my birds I will be posting later on. Thanks for all the comments on Surely. It helps, more than anyone will know.

Growing Old Isn't For Sissies

Surely has been exhibiting some odd behavior this past month. It started with her drinking copious amounts of water and of course what goes in must come out. Accidents started happening. In the morning, the minute her fuzzy little head pops up, I grab her and run out the door. What a lousy way to start the morning for man or beast. Soon after the she started guzzling water food became all important. Once again accidents started occurring. Then came the staring, the hollow eye look. When she wasn’t in my lap, she will stand or lie and stare at me. This can last 30 minutes without a blink. I didn’t think it possible but she has become even clingier.

Along with all of that, vomiting started occurring twice a day and seconds afterwards a seizure would occur.

I finally relented and called a vet.

Her blood work up came out great for a geriatric puppy. There were a couple of issues but her kidney and liver function is normal. She isn’t in any pain. The doctor said that it is probably is a tumor, in her brain. It could have spread to other areas. Without diagnostic testing she cannot confirm this 100% but she is confident that this is the reason for the changes I see in Surely. The ole girl also lost a pound which isn’t good because of her size. The doctor said that Surely will let me know when it is time.

She is on meds for the seizures, and the vomiting. Instead of leaving food out for her I will feed her three times a day. One of her medications has to be taken 1 hour before her meal and the other 30 minutes after her meal, three times a day. This morning after being rushed outside she came in and went straight to her feed dish only to discover it was missing. Before she could get over the shock of losing her beloved dish, she was given two medications without peanut butter. She followed mom and me around for an hour wanting her food. Then when it arrived, only 1/3 cup, she took two bites. That was her way of letting us know she does not approve of having her feed dish taken away. We will repeat this two more times today and start again in the morning.

The vet gave me all of her paperwork and notes, as well as the phone number and address of a hospital in Arizona, in case Surely’s situation changes.

The old adage applies to dogs as well, “Growing old isn’t for sissies.”

There is a bright side for Surely. Since she has to take her medicine three times a day, she will be able to go everywhere with me. Even better her beloved feed dish will travel with her. If she gives me that sad puppy dog look, she knows I will take a back street so she can ride in my lap and she can look out the window. I know the medications will travel with us as well but that is a small price to pay for her to spend the entire day with me.

Ill

I have been sick for the past three days with a nasty stomach ailment. I wish I was nauseous the whole time but unfortunately that was not the case.

Prior to getting ill, I start to get hungry. I find myself munching on this and that throughout the day and by evening I know what is coming. It is then I start praying please let me become nauseous. The next day the illness strikes and I start eating enough to feed a third world country for a day. I am not joking.

My mother started lunch the other day, while I am lying on the couch blanketed by 57 empty packages of the 100 calories snack bags of assorted snacks. She says “Where are the hotdogs?” I put away two of them at 3:00 a.m. Then I napped for an hour and ate the hotdogs buns when I woke up. Canned tuna, clam chowder soup, a bag of potato chips with dip, two jars of peanuts, Ben and Jerry Ice Cream (Everything But The), a pot of hamburger soup, three helpings of rice, carrots, celery, bowls of cereal…… Then it is over. The illness, the insatiable appetite, and I fast for a day.

What is wrong with me? It happens every time I fall ill, unless I am nauseous. I am scared that one day I will eat everything in the house but Surely’s dog cookies and then there will be trouble.

Friday I decided to pull myself off the couch, throw away the wrappers, brush off the crumbs and get out of the house. Of course I wanted to go Furr’s Buffet but I wisely steered myself towards the mountains.

Enjoy the pictures.

TAG your it.

Sandra a fellow RVer tagged me and here it is.

Random/Weird facts about me:

When I was younger and had a figure I like to dress like Mrs. Cleaver.
It was I that set fire to the woods behind the house.
I have REAL fear of driving in snow. If two flakes fall, this flake falls apart.
I wanted to name my children Autumn, Edwina, and Herbert. Fortunately they are (in the same order) James, Scott, and Hannah.
I never thought I would be driving something as big as a bus and pulling a car.

Top 5 Seen/See Again list - there are so many beautiful places it's hard to choose:

Copan Honduras – I especially liked the place where the Mayan women would go to give birth on giant frogs. It was a spiritual place. This is the place where I learned to hitchhike, found taxi drivers that would put New York cabbies to shame, and learned to strike out on my own in a foreign country.
Tikal – There lies my heart.
El Ceibal – Despite the heat, humidity, mosquitoes and the hike it is a place of great beauty. It is located on a hill overlooking Río de la Pasión in Guatemala. I found out after a long boat ride, a long hike it is accessible by vehicle but I wouldn’t have missed it in the world. It was there I tasted sweet corn roasted on an open fire doused in lime juice.
El Remate Guatemala –I spent a week there. Catching buses to Flores and Tikal, nearly drowned in Lake Peten, and the sunsets are spectacular. Just a wonderful place to relax. One word of warning…. The kayak’s paddles are made of industrial strength steel and will sink the minute you drop it.
Belize – That is where I would live the remainder of my life if given the opportunity.

I can only come up with four people that might do this tag.

You Asked And I Did It

This is a beautiful morning. I am looking at the Organ Mountains, my little roadrunner buddy is sitting on the fence, and my old friend is snoring. It doesn’t matter that my pipes are frozen; mom and I need a bath, and Surely did a “no no” on the rug this morning. What matters is right now. Peace – quiet – a view of the mountains.

What a week it has been! My daughter and her boyfriend, Robert came down. There is nothing like having family members visit you. I consider Robert a son. I have called him with problems, called him for advice, and for comfort. He in turn has always come through for me and has tolerated my ignorance with patience. I love these people and my grandpuppies.

The visit started with a Christmas party and ended with us taking off our shoes, rolling up our pants, and jumping on a sled. The rest of the week was a blur of activities, laughter, and love. Robert and Hannah’s friend, Josh joined up midweek and that only liven things up more, if that was possible. We toured Mesilla – several times. Ate at a haunted restaurant, shopped at the Purple Lizard, and toured two Air, Missile museums. It was a learning experience. It left mom and I thoroughly exhausted but happy.

Thank you Robert and Hannah for the wonderful gifts and memories.

Mom and I are now independent. Our house on wheels has been equipped with all the necessary equipment to tow the car and we are giddy with excitement of where we will be next. We can leave anytime, we have our freedom back, and we are EXCITED. I know that losing my freedom is what brought on my sadness and silence from the blogging world. Las Cruces is beautiful and it is a great town to explore but I still wanted to be able to take off when I wanted. Now I can.

I updated my webpage. It took two days because I was so far behind but pictures are online. Below are the links to my pictures. ENJOY

“Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been headed: the final fatal role of the young would-be black man," Obama wrote. Mostly he smoked marijuana and drank alcohol, he wrote, but occasionally he would snort cocaine when he could afford it.
Hilary is now attacking Barack Obama about his drug use. This is interesting. Wasn’t it President Clinton that said, “I smoked pot but didn’t inhale?” He also said, “I didn’t have sex with that woman.”

Don’t hang out other people’s dirty laundry on the proverbial clothesline until you take a look at your own.

Hibernation

I am silent because I am hibernating until January 2nd. Like a grumpy bear I will emerge from my cave after the holidays to avoid verbal altercations and road rage.

I was born in the time of baby boomers, person born between 1946 and 1964. I am not sure what they are calling people born in the 1980s but I call them 80 babies. I feel the majority of people born in this decade are very self centered and don’t have a clue about customer service. They were given awards for just about everything which they did not earn or deserve. I believe the reasoning for doing this is to boost their self esteem. I would venture to guess that none of the people were ever given a spanking. They have been pampered and over nurtured. Now, they are adults in need of an attitude adjustment. It is not “customer service” it is “me service”.

The latest example of dealing with a twenty something sales clerk was the other day. I went into Circuit City to purchase a much needed photo printer. After waiting 30 minutes for a group of 80s babies to finish their personal phone calls, one of them decided to help me. She asked me to go to the next aisle and find a sales clerk. I could feel my blood pressure rising. When mom finally found one, the clerk had to let me know that I was inconveniencing her first. I told what I wanted and showed her a display that had the printer. She looked at it and said “we don’t have it in stock.”

My response: “Excuse me, could you please check to make sure or check the computer to see if they have it in stock at the other Circuit City.” She just stomped off.

I can hear her now in the break room. “I had to take care of a real bitch; she demanded that I do my job and expected a professional salesclerk that knew about customer service. I just won employee of the day award for showing up for work so what does she know?”

These are the same people that drive an interstate as if they are competing in a race. Zip, Zip, Duck, Dart, BRAKE, and oh here is your award for killing more people on an interstate in a single day.

Then there are the Born Again Christians sale clerks. They will let you know they are born again and give you a brief lecture on becoming born again. Not enough to get fired, just enough to irritate you. They end the transaction with “God Bless You.” When you come home with your purchase to find it defective and call to request repairs or replacement, you get an ear full. My usual response is “Excuse me, could you please remove the knife you just plunged into my back so far that it protrudes from the other side. Thank you and God Bless.” These are folks who hide their ugly side with biblical quotes and God Bless You. I guess it will insure them a place in Heaven. “Listen God for every person I took advantage of I quoted a passage from your book and that forgives me for my transgressions.”

As angry as I am, when I come home I am surround by caring, fun people. I have two great neighbors; in fact I have a wonderful neighborhood. Folks that reside here enjoy talking to each other and sharing great stories. All of the women have no problems sharing their husbands and that is a feel good moment because it is great to see a relationship without fears. I have a resident roadrunner that sits on the fence in front of the RV, a wonderful view of the mountains and the city. I have found my solace, my peace from the rat race. When I feel like venturing out again to enjoy Las Cruces I will be posting more often.

The Dance

Holiday season is upon us and perhaps that is what triggered thoughts of my brother. I don’t think of him often enough, time has a way of doing that when someone close to you passes. Memories have a tendency to creep up on you when you least expect them. Perhaps a smell, a picture, a song triggers that memory. Yesterday quite the opposite happened.

A nostalgic feeling passed over me as I was driving to Staples Office Supply. I felt my brother’s presence. Memories came back to me, which is a rare occurrence since most of my childhood memories are lost to me. Did you know he buried my favorite pair of shoes in a sand pile that was taller than me? Even though I was only 6 or 7 years old at the time I never did find those shoes.

My brother was quick with words and bad puns.

Ray: Pepper, do you know what really REALLY burns my ass?
Pepper: No what
Ray: Grass fire this high.

The last year of his life he started calling me more and more. We would talk for an hour or more. I knew he was unhappy in his marriage, he didn’t have to say it in words, and I never asked him. I miss those late night talks. I would talk to him of my problems and I will never forget the story he told me when I first started “emoting” to him. A lesson I still follow today.
Once upon a time there was a nonconforming sparrow who decided not to fly south for the winter. However, soon the weather turned so cold that he reluctantly started to fly south. In a short time ice began to form on his wings and he fell to earth in a barnyard, almost frozen. A cow passed by and crapped on the little sparrow. The sparrow thought it was the end. But the manure warmed him and defrosted his wings. Warm and happy, able to breathe, he started to sing. Just then a large cat came by and hearing the chirping, investigated the sounds. The cat cleared away the manure, found the chirping bird and promptly ate him... ~~
The moral of the story: ~~
Everyone who ****s on you is not necessarily your enemy
Everyone who gets you out of **** is not necessarily your friend.
And, if you're warm and happy in a pile of ****, keep your mouth shut.
In a weird way thinking of him and our life stories that we shared, I never felt sorrow. It was more of a longing to talk to him once more. I made my purchase and left the store.

Driving home I flipped on the radio and the first song I heard was the song that makes me think of my brother. That is when the tears came.

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared beneath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known you'd ever say goodbye
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn't I the king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey who's to say you know I might have changed it all
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the dance

No pictures of the RV we are still unpacking and sorting.

MY EX

Don’t freak out kids, I promised myself I would say only nice things about your dad. I kept my promise, with the exception of calling him a Teletubby; I will continue to do so now. I will be politically correct. I honor his love of his pet rats and field mice. I have honored his need for seclusion. I understand his paranoia and can even empathize with him. I will continue to honor him.

Back to my daily rant, like Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh, my ex has become an artist. He has an exhibit at Drury College and a kind soul even wrote a book about him and his art.

Even though, I closed my child support case against and do not want compensation - the State of Missouri has not. I hope he will have enough cash to pay them off.

I am so happy that he found his medium and he has accomplished something that his children and grandchildren will talk about with pride.

Here is the websites if you wish to see his work.

In all fairness, I do hope he does receive some compensation for the book. I do mean that sincerely. It is his life, his work, his memories and even though you cannot put a monetary value on that, he should be compensated.

Nuff said.

Changes

I am stoic. Just ask my doctor, it is in my personal records. When I hurt I don’t’ complain. Sneezing and the flu is a different for me. I am not in pain I am miserable and I want the world around me to share my misery.

Somewhere between lifting dad and heavy boxes at work I did a number on my back. Now it is pretty much a daily pain. On good nights I will sleep on my mattress on the floor, on bad nights I sleep on the couch. When I drive I keep a pillow behind me but I can go only drive for a couple of hours before I have to stop and lay down. One of the problems is I can’t reach anything. If it wasn’t for the extensions I wouldn’t be able to drive.

Then there are a few issues that I won’t discuss in my blog regarding my home. I will say this all maintenance records are on file both in a cabinet and computer. It is the same with all vehicles. On that note I will say….

It is with a heavy heart that we say good bye to our Holiday Rambler.

We really wanted to keep our home for a long time. We started and have a lot of memories here. It has been more of a home to both mom and I than our home on a foundation. There is a time to throw in the towel and let go.

We take possession of our new home on Monday. It is only a foot longer. It drives like a dream. With a captain seat made for a person of “short stature.” No extensions, no reaching and stretching, and no gadgets. In fact this home is gadget free. We all know what that means…… fewer gadgets less maintenance. It also has four levelers instead of three so there is no worry about getting this one in a bind and popping out the windshield.

I can maintain the motor without the aid of a ladder. The roof is not rubberized. When we put out the slides it actually seals, keeping most cold air out, but more important it keeps us dry. The motor is FINE. The basement is smaller but I can deal with that. The levels are virtually maintenance free which means less crawling under the house.

The kitchen is a littler larger with more counter space and it has a very small oven. I call it a biscuit oven but mom loves it. It has a microwave which is great. I can use a microwave, I can’t use an oven. It also has bunk beds in the hallway. I will have a bed. This will definitely help my back. I will have a little tiny space to call my own and if Surely Not starts taking up most of the bed, well I can pitch her up to the top bunk. Mom will still have her own room. There is separation. The bathroom is bigger but the shower is not. It is the same size. There is also more storage in the actual living space. I wonder if mom will let me bring in my tool box….. Nah

We have been busy trying to pull this together and work out an agreement that suits us financially. Now we are in the process of packing. Most of what we owned is already contained but there is the loose stuff and the cleaning.

When we take possession I will be taking pictures and posting them.

Happy Thanksgiving all.

Brrrrrrr

I am still amazed at my daughter’s determination to camp out while visiting us in December. The average December temperature in Las Cruces, at night, is 27 degrees. Not exactly warm, sometimes they see snow, and I have a feeling Hannah and Robert will be bunking with us.

Yesterday was cold damp and a much needed rain had fallen. Mom and I had to turn on the heater and layer up, so to speak. Surely Not and I took a walk late afternoon and the mountains are spectacular. It made the cold weather tolerable.

I am a fan of Trace Atkins’ music. Last night I was watching one of my favorite shows, Glenn Beck and to my surprise Trace Atkins was a guest. What I did not know was he had written a book about his personal viewpoints. I almost died laughing when he compared terrorism with genital herpes. I am definitely going to check out his book. I was also surprised when he said he would support Mike Huckabee's campaign. Of course at the end of the show during Rapid Fire when asked if he would rather be a vegetarian or a liberal, his response was “I’d rather eat grass.” Amen Brother Ben.

On that note……

Lilli, I go with Kodak or Shutterfy. I know WalMarts will make calendars. There is also Photoworks.

Right now I like the different options that Shutterfly has. I will probably go with that.

Yipee!

We are in New Mexico! It was a pain in the butt to get both car and RV here but I am happy we are here. It is a wonderful park with cable TV, and internet. I had to back the RV into the spot and had a little problem with a tree. The owners and employees came out with a saw and a chainsaw. They gave the Mulberry tree a trim and then directed me in. It is a nice spot with a concrete pad, picnic table, and a place to park the car. Happy happy, joy joy.

Every year friends and family receive a calendar from me. I try to remember what pictures (that I have taken) they comment on and make calendars. This is going to be interesting with Rusty aka James because the only comment he has made is on the picture mom took of the tire after the blow out. Last year Hannah received a cemetery calendar and my sister received flowers on her calendar. There are several good websites that I can upload my pictures to and I use their formatting. They come out pretty good, no one has complained and every year I receive requests.

I am so happy to be out of El Paso. Starting around 3:00 and ending around 7:30 the traffic backs up. The park we were staying was by the interstate and the noise would be so loud that it would block out the TV. It was really odd. Mom and I never stopped sneezing and coughing the whole time we were there. You could look out towards Mexico and see the pollution. They kept saying the air quality was fine but I have my doubts. There is not much Texas can do because Mexico’s laws governing air quality is not the same as the US.

What I found fascinating was the drive back to Las Cruces tonight. The wind had picked up and you could see the dust in the lights. It was eerie but in a beautiful way.

Thanks for all your comments, they are appreciated.

Adios El Paso

We are moving, come hell or high water.

I finally found the real cause for the brake failure and who is responsible for the damage done. A claim has been filed and I will be reimbursed.

We found a park in Las Cruces and will be there for a month. It will give me time to create my Christmas Calendars and update my photo albums.

Hopefully tonight I will be posting from New Mexico.

Until Later.

To Answer Your Question Lynilu

We are still in El Paso. We picked up the car yesterday afternoon. It still needs two back tires so we are cautious about driving it. Hopefully tomorrow we will have that repair down.

I am planning to drive to Las Cruces Tuesday, find a place to stay, and then return. We haven't figured out all of the details on how to get both the RV and car to New Mexico. I am hoping to have that resolved tomorrow.

The car now has four brand new tires, new brakes, and an oil change. It is running great. Rusty, there was no front end problems. I will also find out how much of this is covered by insurance.

It is a comforting feeling to look out the window and see my car. I absolutely feel helpless without it. Of course I could always drive the motorhome to WalMarts but it is not the same.

All in all we are in good shape for the shape we are in. We are both wanting to get back on the road again which is healthy.

The is the first time I have been able to get on the net today. The internet service at the park is iffy.

I will keep everyone posted on what is happening. Hopefully we will be in Las Cruces by the end of the week.

Living On Carmex and Tums

The car is still in the shop. They are going to have someone else look at the brakes.

This afternoon, when I called, I was told something about the brake oil overheating but I was distracted because I was digging through my purse for Carmex and Tums.

We will be staying here for another week.

Concordia Cemetery

Today, mom and I went to Concordia Cemetery in El Paso Texas. 65,000 people call this cemetery “home.” Filled with broken crosses, cracked concrete, trash, and one scrawny cat, it was a place of sadness because of the lack of care.

The history of the cemetery is interesting. In 1854, a chapel and cemetery were built on a ranch owned by Hugh Stephenson. The first person buried at Concordia was Hugh’s wife, Juanita. She was gored by a pet deer in 1856. Mr. Stephenson lost his ranch after the civil war but his son-in-law was able to purchase the property. He divided the property equally between Stephenson’s heirs. By the 1880s, various groups interested in establishing cemeteries were contacting the heirs. The city of El Paso bought its first part of the cemetery in 1882 as a burial ground for paupers.

By the 1890s, sections had been purchased by different groups and were designated Jesuit, Catholic, Masonic, Jewish, Black, Chinese, military, city, county and other ethnic and social groups.

Some of the residents of the cemetery are: Reverend Joseph Tays, an Episcopal missionary who found El Paso’s first Protestant church, Carlos Pinto, founder of five Catholic churches, James H. Bigg, WWI aviator for whom Biggs Field is named, to name a few. However, it is the grave of a gunfighter, John Wesley Hardin that gets all of the attention. It has been said that he killed more people than Billy the Kid and Jesse James.

Four Hours On The Road

We spent four hours on the road, or rather on the side of the road. We were going to Las Cruces New Mexico from Van Horn Texas. When I crested the top of the hill, all was fine. It was just seconds after I started the descent that my brake light from my brake buddy came on. I pulled over.

The front tire was smoking and I heard the second one going down. I tried not to panic. I couldn't figure out what happened. In emergency situations I try to figure out why before I react. When I realized that thinking was not the solution I called Good Sam Roadside Service. One hour later I received the call that a tow truck was on its way and would be there in twenty minutes.

The tow truck driver's english was so poor. He wouldn't talk to us, and when he did he said "take tires be back in 40 minutes. I was floored. I figured they would tow us.... somewhere..... anywhere but not leave us on the side of I-10 with no front tires.

I called Robert, Hannah's boyfriend. Not only did I received sound advice but just hearing his voice calmed me down. I called Good Sam and told him I was concerned about the brakes on the car. I told him about the tow truck driver poor english skills and then.... I lost it.

My children will tell you I am not the kind of person who cries.

The gentleman at Good Sams was so calm, he gave his credentials and told me what to do and how to do it.

An hour or more the tow truck driver came by with two new tires and he brought his boss. His boss was very calm, spoke in that wonderful thick accent that I love, and said "brakes are fine, braking system doesn't work."

The tires were then put back on and I drove carefully down the rest of the incline.

We pulled into a park in El Paso. All I wanted to do was level the RV, set up camp, then curl up in a fetal position with my blanky and thumb.

Then the levelers started acting up and I was so close to a nervous breakdown, I was thinking seriously about guzzling Surely Not's knock out medicine. My neighbor came over and he was so helpful. The hour I spent with him I learned so much about my motorhome. Then he asked me "was that you stuck on I-10?"

Then we spent another hour going through by braking system. He showed me how to dismantle the power cord and check the contacts, then he checked my braking buddy. He then picked up my braking system and explained how it works. When he was talking to me, it suddenly went off. If the clamp was on my brake it would have put the brake on. That my friends was the problem.

We are fine. The car will be going in for a check up this week, the braking system will be replaced, and we will be on the road... eventually.

Now I need to go find my blanky and curl up in fetal position. Internet is poor so it will be sporadic posting until we leave El Paso.

For 15 years Surely Not has lived without a leash, most times without a collar. She was fortunate to live where she could roam free and enjoy being a dog. It wasn’t until we moved into our little house on wheels that she was forced to wear a collar and leash. I was surprised when she took to this restriction.

One of her greatest pleasures in life is the opportunity to run without the leash. With her eyesight and hearing diminishing, I found giving her this opportunity difficult to do. I have lived with her for 17 years; I know her habits, and her little quirks. I know when she becomes confused at night when her eyesight is at its worse she will walk around in a circle. I know when she loses sight of me she will search for me. I also know when she is tired she will lay down even during a hike. Because of her failing eyesight and hearing, I decided to purchase her a cat collar with a little bell.

At night, while I am starting to drift off I can hear her walking around. I did not know, until the bell, how much water she drinks at night. When I put her outside for her evening constitutional, without a leash, I can hear the soft chime of the bell and can zero in on her if she gets a little confused. It is usually dark and she never wanders to far from the door. As I stated earlier I know her quirks and habits.

The bell turned out to be a life saver on our hike in the Rockcap Canyon State Park. It was a long downhill hike to the little river. As usual I stayed close to her with leash in hand and helped down a few small ledges and around a few prickly pear cacti. Because of her size I would lose sight of her but I would hear her little bell. In a matter of seconds she would pop out of the high grass and I swear she would have a smile on her face.

We tried the hike around the canyon where the trail was easier and a little flatter. I think she put all of her energy into bounding and leaping because about a ½ mile down the trail I stopped hearing the bell. She is most times ahead of me but this time she was behind me. When I turned around, I saw her, she was in the shade stretched out and resting. I sat with her and enjoyed the scenery. I felt a little sad because of what I saw, knowing she couldn’t see it. She is never more than two feet in front of me or behind me yet that bell was the smartest purchase I have made. As long as I can hear the bell I know where she is, when I can’t hear it I stop. I am well trained, just like Surely Not.

I know some people would consider this an act of abuse or neglect. Some believe all pets should be restrained, others would think that an older dog should be leashed or kept home. I am always aware of Surely Not when she is outside. If she suddenly gets the urge to run to far from me, I will put the leash on her which has not happened but I am prepared. She is 17 years old, she is a grand old lady, and I don’t know how much time she has left. With supervision I want her to have her freedom and enjoy the world around her. When I lose sight of her in tall grass or whatever I can hear the bell.

Today we are in Big Spring Texas; Surely Not is heading out for another adventure in a little park in town. She will have to wear her leash but she will have another grand day. Tomorrow we will head out looking for a warmer climate. Robin I have tried to get a picture of a prairie dog but those little buggers are faster than they look. I am still trying to get a picture. I have a mission. Until later.
