Fairmount Indiana

Today we drove to Fairmount, Indiana using the back roads. We drove by acres of corn and through small towns such as Lapel and Aroma Indiana. We stopped for lunch in Elwood at Friendly’s CafĂ©. It boasts wonderful food and they deserve bragging rights. It was great and very affordable.

We finally arrived in Fairmont early afternoon. Fairmount is a small, slow-moving town with beautiful old homes. You would never imagine that this town is the hometown of James Dean (actor), Jim Davis (creator of Garfield), Phil Jones (television journalist), and Mary Jane Ward (author).

The cemetery was easy to find; just down the road from James Dean’s boyhood home. His tombstone has been chipped away by adoring fans just wanting a piece of him. Quarters and pennies laid scatter on the ground and lipstick prints are noticeable. The ground around his gravesite was bare from people standing and paying their respects to young, talented man taken to soon.
