I am still going through pictures of our romp through Illinois. After seeing the two story outhouse we decided to travel to travel to Shelbyville Illinois and see the Freedom Center. It is a classic courthouse square monument, dedicated in 1907 to the Soldiers and Sailors of the Spanish-American, Civil, Mexican, 1812, and Revolutionary Wars. What makes it interesting is they updated it to include all wars up to Desert Storm. Beneath Freedom Center is a black marble pedestal which hosts an eternal flame and a photo etchings of US Marines raising the flag at Mt. Suribachi and General McArthur walking ashore.
The courthouse is a beautiful Victorian building. It features two Grecian statues in niches above the front doors, representing the Goddesses of Liberty and Justice. Sculptor John McClarey created an awesome sculpture, “Let’s Debate” and that is located in the front of the courthouse.
I wish I had more time to explore Shelbyville but mom and I were in a hurry to see a statue of Lincoln with a pig. Yeah, we need to get a life..... Wait this is our life and life is WONDERFUL!!!!
