Growing Old Isn't For Sissies

Surely has been exhibiting some odd behavior this past month. It started with her drinking copious amounts of water and of course what goes in must come out. Accidents started happening. In the morning, the minute her fuzzy little head pops up, I grab her and run out the door. What a lousy way to start the morning for man or beast. Soon after the she started guzzling water food became all important. Once again accidents started occurring. Then came the staring, the hollow eye look. When she wasn’t in my lap, she will stand or lie and stare at me. This can last 30 minutes without a blink. I didn’t think it possible but she has become even clingier.

Along with all of that, vomiting started occurring twice a day and seconds afterwards a seizure would occur.

I finally relented and called a vet.

Her blood work up came out great for a geriatric puppy. There were a couple of issues but her kidney and liver function is normal. She isn’t in any pain. The doctor said that it is probably is a tumor, in her brain. It could have spread to other areas. Without diagnostic testing she cannot confirm this 100% but she is confident that this is the reason for the changes I see in Surely. The ole girl also lost a pound which isn’t good because of her size. The doctor said that Surely will let me know when it is time.

She is on meds for the seizures, and the vomiting. Instead of leaving food out for her I will feed her three times a day. One of her medications has to be taken 1 hour before her meal and the other 30 minutes after her meal, three times a day. This morning after being rushed outside she came in and went straight to her feed dish only to discover it was missing. Before she could get over the shock of losing her beloved dish, she was given two medications without peanut butter. She followed mom and me around for an hour wanting her food. Then when it arrived, only 1/3 cup, she took two bites. That was her way of letting us know she does not approve of having her feed dish taken away. We will repeat this two more times today and start again in the morning.

The vet gave me all of her paperwork and notes, as well as the phone number and address of a hospital in Arizona, in case Surely’s situation changes.

The old adage applies to dogs as well, “Growing old isn’t for sissies.”

There is a bright side for Surely. Since she has to take her medicine three times a day, she will be able to go everywhere with me. Even better her beloved feed dish will travel with her. If she gives me that sad puppy dog look, she knows I will take a back street so she can ride in my lap and she can look out the window. I know the medications will travel with us as well but that is a small price to pay for her to spend the entire day with me.
